Naphtali Press Special Editions

http://www.naphtali.com/titles/naphtali-press-special-editions/We will soon launch Naphtali Press Special Editions (NPSE). This endeavor will use crowd funding, hearkening back to the old days of subscription and even older days of patron supported publication for a unique and I think important series of books. The goal is up to 3 volumes a year depending on complexity and expense. Before launching a Kickstarter drive, we are looking to raise sponsorships for the series (sponsors get the year’s books and other perks and rewards based on levels of support). The projects that can be done in this series are only limited by the level of interest. There are of course old puritan works that have not seen new editions since the 17th century (think Naaman the Syrian, etc.), classic Scottish Presbyterian works that are now relatively unknown, and there are works in manuscript which have yet to be transcribed and published. And if interest is really there, there are works that remain locked up in Latin to this day. Over the years through Naphtali Press and The Confessional Presbyterian journal, I’ve garnered the experience to tackle these kind of projects or know the people who can certainly help me as needed. If the potential of this series excites you and you have the means, I would welcome your support, which starts at $199 a year for regular US sponsorship. If that is something to consider, see more information athttp://www.naphtali.com/titles/naphtali-press-special-editions/ . The first title for the 2019-20 series year will be vol. 1 of 3 of a new edition of James Durham’s Commentary on Revelation (collated with prior editions and a newly uncovered manuscript), which could go to press late in the year. If all goes well, this would be followed in short order by two titles in first quarter 2020: a new critical edition of perhaps the most famous work on church government (almost but not quite a work of the Westminster Assembly), the classic Jus Divinum Regiminis Ecclesiastici; and published for the first time from manuscript, David Dickson’s sermons on the book of Lamentations.

Naphtali Press Special Editions. Taking prepublication orders for James Durham’s Commentary upon Revelation, vol. 1, and continuing to accept Series Sponsorships for 2019-20 series year titles.

(if video is not showing, see here). International orders: we are presently negotiating distribution for outside the US. Due to extreme postage expenses, we are not taking direct international orders, with the exception of International Sponsors (see below).

**We are moving ahead with this exciting new series of books. For a limited time we are still offering series sponsor opportunities for 2019-20 (see below). Once with enough prepublication orders and sponsorships, we expect to go to print before the end of the year with Durham on Revelation volume 1. For USA ship to addresses, you can order prepub ($40+$8 postage buy now) or you may still become a Series Sponsor for the 2019-20 series year and receive all of the proposed titles that go to print, special bookplates, and your name recognized and printed in the series sponsor section in front of each volume. See the Store and choose prepub or a sponsorship level, or use the quick pay Paypal links below to sponsor. **

Cliff Notes description (far more detail below). We are seeking series sponsors (renewed annually) for the 2019-20 launch year of Naphtali Press Special Editions (NPSE). The potential is great to do large puritan works never reprinted, classic presbyterian titles and translation and transcription from manuscript titles never before in print. Series Sponsors help support the R&D work and aide meeting the minimum goals for publication for the titles undertaken for the series year. The more sponsors the more ambitious this series can be. Sponsors are recognized in the series section prefacing each volume and receive that year’s titles and a special book plate for each volume. Other levels of support receive other ‘rewards’.  You may not be interested in every title, but if the potential scope and potential of this series excites you, please consider becoming a series sponsor.

More information is below the sponsorship pay links. For limited available higher level sponsorship (>$1000), page down for the description and contact me if that is something of interest.

  • 2019-2020 series year titles proposed are James Durham’s Commentary on Revelation, volume 1 on chapters one through three (of 3 vols. planned), compared with all prior editions and a new found manuscript of the original form of the lectures, Jus Divinum Regiminis Ecclesiastici, a critical edition, 30% more text than the 1995 Naphtali edition, and first time ever in print, David Dickson’s 1628 Sermons on Jeremiah’s Lamentations, transcribed and edited from a recently discovered manuscript.

2019-20 Sponsorship levels (see higher levels and more information as well as full NPSE series description after the summary of the regular levels). For any USA sponsoring level, please feel free to contact me to pay by check or ask further questions. Paypal should provide a box for more information if you want your sponsorship to read differently than the billing name. If not, email me with how you want the sponsorship to read. You may add a spouse, use The Family of, and add a church if you are a pastor. If you want to sign up but need to pay in a couple or several installments, particularly for higher levels, contact me

This is the workhorse level of support. Pledges at this level help make the series possible and help meet the threshold minimums necessary for titles to go to print each year. Rewards: Name* listed as Series Sponsor in Series Sponsor section in the front of the 2019-20 titles published; receives a copy of all 2019-20 titles that go to print; and receives Series Sponsor Book Plates with each of these. Renewals for the subsequent year will go out once the prior year titles have all gone to print and shipped (possibly as early as March or as late as June), at the regular sponsorship level to continue support and receive the next year’s titles in the series; there will be special sponsor offers to consider as was with this year.

All the rewards of the Regular Series Sponsorship. PLUS:

Sponsors at this level receive a copy of The Westminster Larger Catechism Transcripts, regular edition. See Special Rewards descriptions below. Renewal each year will be offered at the regular sponsorship level to continue support and receive that year’s titles in the series, and there will be new special sponsor offers to consider.

All the rewards of the Regular Series Sponsorship. PLUS:
Sponsors at this level receive a copy of the Solemn League & Covenant Broadside, regular unsigned edition. See Special Rewards descriptions. Renewal each Year will be offered at the regular sponsorship level to continue support and receive that year’s titles in the series, and there will be new special sponsor offers to consider.

The same as Regular Series Sponsor USA but to cover international shipping.

Series Desciption (see detailed and greater sponsor level descriptions below). Naphtali Press is in the process of launching a new series of books called Naphtali Press Special Editions. The concept is to use annually renewed sponsorships as well as prepub sales, hearkening back to the old days of subscription and even older days of patron supported publishing (see more information below), to get important books into print. The first title of the launch  series year 2019-20 should be ready in a month or so to go to press once sufficient prepub and sponsorships are reached. This will be the first volume of a projected 3 volume new critical edition of James Durham’s Commentary on Revelation.

This series with enough sponsorship has great potential to do large puritan works never reprinted (e.g. Naaman the Syrian type works), classic presbyterian titles and first time translation work, and transcriptions from manuscript never before in print. Series Sponsors help support the R&D work and help meet the minimum goals for publication for the titles undertaken for the series each year. The more sponsors the more ambitious this series can be. Sponsors are recognized in the series section prefacing each volume and receive that year’s titles, give input on title selection and other perks or rewards based on sponsorship level. The regular sponsorship level is $199 US and $299 International.

As noted in the video linked at the top of this email (with a debt of gratitude to Matthew Vogan and Al Smith for producing), the inaugural volume will be the first of a projected three ~500 page volumes of a new edition of James Durham’s classic puritan Commentary upon the Book of the Revelation. The other two titles also only require modest work to complete. These titles are a new critical edition of Jus Divinum Regiminis Ecclesiastici, or the divine right of church government. This was almost but not quite an official work of the Westminster Assembly, defending biblical church government against an attack by the Erastian parliament which had summoned its aid and advice. The text is ~400pp with 30 percent restored/corrected text over that in the 1995 NP edition which omitted much of the Latin references,  of which the significantly ones are are translated for the new edition. The last of the three titles planned for 2019–20 will be a first edition of David Dickson’s 1628 Sermons on Jeremiah’s Lamentations, transcribed and edited from a recently uncovered manuscript (~304pp). The greater sponsor support raised ensures all titles get to print either reducing the needed prepub levels or eliminating that concern. We should proceed with JDRE and the Dickson in early 2020 and release prepub offers at that time.

The plan is for subsequent years to follow roughly this same pattern with the change over being the summer of each year between series years, and sponsorship renewals and drives happening then. Future projects could be multi volume editions of large puritan classic such as Daniel Rogers’ Naaman the Syrian (a 900 page folio, big enough to burden one of Naaman’s mules, as Spurgeon wrote) and other classic English Puritan and Scottish Presbyterian works. The possibilities are wide open if the support is there for a project, whether it is editing these puritan classics never yet republished, or doing first time translation work, or transcriptions from long lost manuscripts. The number of 17th century manuscripts discovered the last few years holds great potential if the interest is there.

I am energized about the prospects for this series and if enough interest is there, we will see some important work in print again or even for the very first time. A key to success will be how many sponsors are interested in annually supporting the Naphtali Press Special Editions series, as sponsors are essentially helping the R&D for otherwise cost prohibitive projects. Please consider one of the sponsorship levels offered and note some of the special rewards offered for the higher levels of support.

Contact me to arrange payment and discuss how this is to be specifically directed with regard to the 2019-20 titles. Co-publishers are recognized as such with a special thanks in the Series Sponsorship section and if the sponsorship is for one title and in an amount that ensures its publication, also noted on the title page itself as Sponsoring Co-publisher. As with any level you can remain anonymous and stipulate how this is recognized, subject to publisher approval.
